SELF PORTRAITS
Digital Art & Animation students were invited to explore the rich history of the self-portrait in art and design. Students were introduced to iconic self-portrait works by artists such as Andy Warhol and Cindy Sherman, examining how artists use imagery, symbolism, and visual storytelling to express identity and perspective. They also reviewed contemporary examples of self-portraiture and digital self-expression.
In an era dominated by selfies and social media, students were challenged to move beyond the snapshot and create an artistic representation of themselves using Adobe Photoshop.

Learning Objective
Students will analyze historical and contemporary examples of self-portraiture, including works by influential artists, and apply Adobe Photoshop tools and design principles to create an original digital self-portrait that communicates personal identity, artistic style, and visual storytelling through the effective use of composition, imagery, typography, color, and digital editing techniques.
Demonstration of Learning
Students will demonstrate mastery by creating and presenting an original digital self-portrait in Adobe Photoshop that:
- Incorporates at least three Photoshop tools or techniques (e.g., layers, masking, adjustment layers, filters, typography, or compositing).
- Demonstrates an understanding of design principles such as balance, contrast, emphasis, unity, and composition.
- Reflects personal identity, interests, experiences, or artistic influences through purposeful visual choices.
- Shows evidence of planning, creativity, and technical proficiency.
- Includes a brief written artist statement (1–2 paragraphs) explaining the concept, artistic influences, Photoshop techniques used, and how the artwork communicates their unique identity and style.
